US Department of Energy Partners with AMD on $1B Supercomputer Project
The US Department of Energy has unveiled a $1 billion collaboration with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to develop two cutting-edge supercomputers. These systems will address complex scientific challenges, from nuclear energy research to cancer treatment advancements and national security applications.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized the project's potential to accelerate breakthroughs in fusion energy replication, a critical frontier in sustainable power. "We're recreating the center of the SUN on Earth," Wright stated, projecting practical fusion energy pathways within two to three years through these computational resources.
The supercomputers will leverage AMD's MI355X AI chips alongside proprietary CPUs and networking components. AMD CEO Lisa Su noted the unprecedented deployment speed of this infrastructure, marking a significant milestone in high-performance computing.
